small market in Troyan

Troyan, Bulgaria
(competition project, 2017)

This collaboration happened over an intense three week period in the spring of 2017. A small municipality in the middle of Bulgaria held an open competition for replacing their ageing ad-hoc accretion of market stalls with a market house. I was privileged to co-lead a team with Arch. Ivaylo Petkov of 10 architects, and Arch. Mintcho Petkov.

Following our typology studies of small enclosed markets around the world the team decided to emphasize on the market building as the catalyst to and an envelope of a public space. Our submission inverted the parking requirement, intended as an underground structure, replacing it with a parking deck over the market house. The team evaluated that as the better decision combining it with a PV equipped pergola which doubled as a parasol for the vehicles.
